LEARNING TO BE CLOSER TO A BETTER WORLD

Every day do something that will inch you closer to a better tomorrow.

Doug Firebaugh

I'm feeling like I'm closer to a better world. It is surprising to believe, we are in the middle of our course. Every week, we get to learn new things which broaden our mind. But this week was special for me. I think, this was one year ago, accidently I had taken a class of my one of the senior. I sure I didn't stayed not more than five minutes in his class. He was giving lecture on technology enhanced project based learning. I have some sketch in my mind that he was talking about www.zunal.com, www.webquest.com. I remember, he was telling, these sites are helpful to design the project work. But today, I'm very happy that I designed project work in my own. I designed rubrics as well. Many times I have heard about rubrics and seen as well but for the first time in my life, I made it though I'm not sure whether I correctly made or incorrectly.

This week, we had five tasks; a discussion on assessment, rubrics and project based learning, a task of developing rubrics by the help of www.rubistar4teacher.com, project task 4 on describing a potential change, blog reflection and extra credit task on creating a technology enhanced project or web quest in www.zunal.com or www.webquest.com. From my side, I completed the entire task listed in our schedule. The only things remained is to listen my friends and instructor's comment and go accordingly.

As a first assignment, we had reading about rubrics, project based learning and web quests and discussion on how can rubrics, alternative assessment and project based learning encourage my students to become more autonomous learners? I read the article published by NCLRC on alternative assessment, visited some websites, took ideas by the research report of Susan Gaer in http://www.ncsall.net/index.html@id=385.html and saw the model of Gaer's students' project in http://susangaer.com/studentprojects/ which was tremendously rich in contents. I get many ideas from here which I have mentioned in our thread.

In the same way, as a second assignment, I created a rubric to assess story writing of the children. To see my rubrics go to rubrics in our wiki page. I have added the link there. As a third assignment, we had to describe a technology related change that we will implement to help with one or more of the issues we mentioned before. It should have something that we are not doing now.

In my class the problems was on motivation of the learners. In my view, lack of the motivation in using technology inside the classroom is little knowledge on how to use it and not favorable environment at home as well not good access at school.  There is a culture in my country that students feel, only assignments of course book should be done, they are not habitual in this type of creative writing things. Therefore, they don't write and post in their blog and seems blogging project is not running smoothly. For solving the above problems, first of all awareness rising is important to the stakeholders. If stakeholders are aware in the importance of technology they provide favorable environment inside the classroom and at home. Then, each and every day students get lots of input and exposure and obviously, it will make them competent in using internet. It is one of the sources of motivation in students. Then, for the next problem solution can be providing reward, showing the values of its importance by teacher. Here, reward doesn't mean giving tangible things; it can be encouragement and affirmation.
To solve above problems I will try my best to raise the awareness of guardians and school administration and other stakeholders as well as I will encourage my students to make blogging project success through rewarding them and making them feel of healthy competition among students or group of students.

Next assignment was; extra credit task on creating a technology enhanced project or web quest in www.zunal.com or www.webquest.com. I tried my best on creating a project on STORY WRITING: NEW LANGUAGE…NEW LANDSCAPES. The project given by Courtney helped me what to do and how to do. I watch some videos on YouTube what is web quest, how can web quest be created. In addition, I visited some project on Zunal. Finally, I got some ideas and develop my own project on www.zunal.com. Dear friends, I hope you will visit my project on http://zunal.com/webquest.php?w=182176 and give me constructive suggestions.

Hope to learn more new things…………J

RECIPROCAL RELATION...

FOURTH REFLECTIVE JOURNEY..........

It is Thursday, I'm happy in the sense that I completed my assignments early this week. Mainly, we had three assignments. One is discussion on how to use technology on reading, writing and vocabulary skills, next is thinking about the class and students that we described last week, describing the issues, needs and problems that technology might help and at last, developing technology enhanced lesson plan.

First of all, I worked on discussing how to use technology on reading, writing and vocabulary skills. For the purpose I read an article "Using the internet in ESL writing Instruction" and reviewed of it. This article was very helpful for me. It provided lots of information. It has contained many websites which were very useful for my language classroom. Likewise, I read other given articles too. They were also equally helpful. After reading all the articles I felt the day became productive. Those were really knowledgeable. In the same thread, we had to visit the websites and find out its importance and mention it in the thread as well as we had to choose a topic and write ABCD Objectives. For the purpose, I went through http://www.manythings.org/  Interesting Things for SL Students.

Interesting Things for SL Students has targeted for the beginners to learn English as a Second language. It has an access of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing as well as Vocabulary, grammar, tongue twisters, crossword puzzles, Idioms, Podcasts, jokes and especially voice of America which we have been talking from last week. Among them I chose pronunciation from speaking section. For practicing the pronunciation lesson given in the link, I wrote following ABCD objectives: (c) After practicing the lessons rigorously which is provided in the link, (A) the students (B) will have pronounced the words (D) 95 % accurately while speaking. At last, I shared above link in our course wiki under RWG links. In this section Courtney proposed us to visit more sites which were fabulous. I enjoyed visiting them.

Secondly, I worked on thinking about the class and students, we described last week and wrote the issues, needs and problems that technology might help. Last week I had talked about the importance of blog in creative writing but this week issues and problems of the classes which are to get permission from guardians, to get permission from School administration, limited time, have to complete course on time, mix- ability in learners, problems in enough Internet speed in the School and problems of enough computer per students.

Thirdly, I developed the technology enhanced lesson plan as per Courtney's suggestion. At first, I was confused how to develop it but the model Courtney provided and the information of Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Instructional Technology helped me. After developing lesson, we had to upload it on Google doc. At first I was confused how to do but helping template given by her helped me. Finally, I did.

For me, this week became very relax, cool and enjoyable. I wasn't in pressure like last week. I learnt many things; developing technology enhanced lesson plan, it is needless to say that every week I get chance to learn new and new ideas from my friends and instructor. Thanks to them. I think I'm being habituated in the course and stared enjoying to read the post, comment on the post, improve the things of self, surf new sites, explore new things, try new things and so on. I have started feeling that I wish I could get chance to be with them not only ten weeks more than that.

THIRD REFLECTIVE JOURNEY...

You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.  ~Clay P. Bedford

The third week for me was a very busy week. I were busy on completing all the assignments of second's and third's week. While talking about the third week's assignments, we had three assignments: creating delicious page, Oral/Aural skill building discussion and at last project work step two. www.delicious.com is a site where we can add many link of the websites. For me, it is very helpful as I were worried of bookmarking things. I couldn't remember important websites for the long time. That's why, I would add those websites whether in my favorite page or pin to start but it would make my Laptop slow. So, delicious site is worthy for me, I learnt important and new things.

Then, in the next step we had discussion on oral/aural skill building. It was about reading the articles about CALL for listening, speaking and pronunciation skills. I read two articles "The pedagogy-technology interface in Computer Assisted Pronunciation Training" by A. Neri, C. Cucchiarini, H. Strik, L. Boves and "Developing Listening Skills with Authentic Materials" by Lindsay Miller. The first article examines the relationship between pedagogy and technology in computer assisted Pronunciation Training, its limitations and some recommendations. I like the way this article propose of practicing CAPT through Input, output, and feedback. It is obvious that the more we get input the more we learn. The more we are competent the more we feel easy for the output. And definitely feedback is the most of making our learning effective and to be competent in our area. In my view, CAPT helps to learn in a private and stress free environment where pupils can practice as many time as they want. It is accessible for unlimited input. The Students get feedback by ASR and improve next time as this article believes. It is one of the most important way of improving pronunciation of non-native speakers as they face many problems in giving stress, intonation and pronunciation.

The second article "Developing Listening Skills with Authentic Materials" by Lindsay Miller is one very important article. I felt like I share it with my friends who are conducting research on listening. It would be great source for their literature review. It is true that if we go for the literature on listening, we can rarely find it. Very few researches have been done in this field. In my country, especially secondary level students are week in listening test. They don't practice listening skills in their classroom. Teachers seem not aware of its importance. Very few workshops and trainings address the issues of listening. According to Millar (2003) "It is indeed interesting that listening has not received wider attention in the past given that it is the language skill most often used in everyday life. In further discussion, more than forty percent of our daily communication time is spent on listening, thirty-five percent on speaking, sixteen percent on reading, and only nine percent on writing (Burely-Allen 1995 as cited in Miller, 2003)". It shows that how important is listening in our life but why is it neglected?

In the same way, as a third assignment we had to read one sample project report and comment on that report in nicenet. I found all reports useful for us to understand the situation of different countries. Among the articles, I chose the article of Prem Phyak because it was a report of Nepal. I'm grown up facing the same problems as Mr. Phayak said in his report; problems of load shedding, no easily accessible of Internet, huge numbers of students, lecture methods of teaching learning etc. The overarching goal of this research was to help students develop their academic writing and research skills. It includes: identifying research problem, specifying a research topic, identifying and reviewing the literature, designing appropriate research methodology and tools, collecting and analyzing data, writing a thesis and preparing bibliography. Likewise, the specific goals of this research was going through various websites, reading the articles and review them , reading the chapter on research design method, going through the readings from different websites he has included in his report, reading APA style at noodle Tools. To address the goals of the above objectives different websites are necessary which we can find in his report. First of all he surveyed the students need and conducted the focus group discussion before designing the course. Based on survey he designed research questions which are as follows:
How to help students to access more resources for their research?
Why do they always ask for research topic to the supervisor but do not fix themselves?
Why are they not able to find and review the literature related to their study?
Why they are not motivated to explore more materials for their research?
How can they improve their academic writing and research skills?
At first, he shared the course with the students (20 students under his supervision, 5 of them were in-service teachers, among 15, only 11 students were doing their research work, other 4 students had deferred for the next term). He suggested them to open an e-mail ID either in Google or yahoo. He also taught them how to do it in the classroom by using wireless internet (using modem) for those who did not have e-mail yet. He would meet with students twice a week to review their progresses and for the further plan. Slowly, he taught them to create blog, to update the blog and introduced many useful websites. At the end of the research, he analyzed the outcomes from students' responses and from his reflections. Below are his findings:

Technology used by students: Most of the students started to use email, Google and some started updating the blog of their reflection and started to search ELT related sites.
Usefulness of technology for learning and teaching: Students believed that there are many advantages of technology.
Technology for research skill: All students agreed that technology helps to develop their research skill and started to surf related websites.
Technology for academic writing skill: Phayak that they are doing better in their academic writing.
Changes made: Previously students would feel difficulty following his instruction but at the last of the research they started being familiar with Internet. Some students started blogging, surfing related websites, started to use mail id etc.

In the country like mine only learning to use mail id is also enough for some teachers. I'm blessed with the effort of Mr. Phayak; he contributed a lot for the progression of technology in my country.

He did for twenty ELT Practitioners. Those twenty may do for other twenty. In this way our county may go ahead in technology. One true reality; it was the case of 2010 but after 3 years now in 2013 I think 60% of the village teachers are also aware of such technology because many projects has been implemented in this regarding field. They have a slogan of "A laptop per students" and they are doing well too. They are distributing computers in schools of village. This is one positive aspect to develop technology in my country. I like the research report of Phayak which is very interesting to read, knowledgeable (I got to know many new websites which I wouldn't use) and contextual as well. But he has addressed the objectives of 1, 2 and 6 number. I felt like it would be better and more effective if he had addressed all the objectives of research.

In this way, we came at the end of the third week.

Thank you.

SECOND REFLECTIVE JOURNEY...

It is 27th January, a fine day. The sun is shining in the sky. I'm in my room sitting in a chair. Sun lights are passing through my windows. It seems they are coming to make me warm. I opened my Laptop to write something. I started to reflect back on my work of second week. I was feeling bad as I had not good experience on second week. I couldn't complete my assignments because of some personal problems. First of all, I requested Courtney to let me do my assignments of week second and it is her goodness that she allow me to do in partial credit. I felt like it is far better for me. Therefore, I did all assignments on third week.
In the week second, we had many important discussion. First of all, we discussed on different web searching tools. I got to know many websites which I didn't know before. Truly saying, I have only visited few sites but it is true that all of them are very useful for us. So, I will visit all of them later on. All my friends had good discussion over it. Talking about myself, mostly I would use Google and I knew only few other websites. Our discussion and Courtney's materials was very fruitful for me. I learnt many new tools.
In the next discussion, we had ABCD objectives. It is a method of writing objectives where A means Audience, B means Behavior, C means Condition and D means Degree. Below are the details of this method of writing objectives:
AUDIENCE: It ask the question who. Who the learners are? For example: it can be students, teachers etc.
BEHAVIOR: It asks the question what. What change behavior do you want to see in your students. If you can't see the change behavior you believe that your objective was not proper.
CONDITION: It asks the question how. In what environment learning will occur?
DEGREE: It asks the question how much. How much the students will get? What proficiency level do you want to see? For example: 100%, 80 % etc.
I have posted my ABCD objective in the link http://www.nicenet.org/ICA/class/conf_topic_show.cfm?Topic_id=878285. I request all of my friends to visit and give me constructive suggestion.
The third assignment was project work: step one. The assignment was to think about a course that we taught and that would be benefitted from making technology-inspired change. In this task we discussed the technology that we and our students have access to now, both in and outside of school. I had discussed a class "Use of technology to improve creative writing". I proposed a class which can help students' creative writing through web skills where teachers guide learners to create a blog and motivate students to post their creation in the blog each week. Other students visit and provide comments in their posting which help them to improve further.
In this way we end the week. In the second week, I learnt many new web searching tools, ABCD method of writing objectives and reflect my teaching on use of technology to improve creative writing.

MY JOURNEY ON BLOGGING.....:)

It is not my first blog, before I had tried blogging through www.wordpress.com but I think I couldn't manage and go longer. It is one of the awesome experience making blog with the guidance of  OU-AEI E-Teacher Scholarship program. I believe, I will go longer this time.
I kept the name of my blog is Reflective Teaching, thinking reflecting is mirroring myself. In this blog I will be mirroring myself, the learning I will learn. I will examine the attitude, beliefs, assumptions and the teaching practices and use the obtained information as a critical reflection about teaching through web skills.
